If you've ever gone to the Youtube, specificly in the comments section, in every Armenian or Azerbaijani-related video there's always someone bringing about the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. What is Nagorno Karabakh? And why does it have anything to do with these countries? Let's find out!

Republic of Artsakh is a self-declared sovereignty country

In the Dec of 1991, a country proclaimed its independence under the flag inspired by the Armenian flag with white patterns added. Its former name was Nagorno Karabakh and Its capital is in Stephanakert. It changed its name following the constitutional referendum in 2017. Majority are ethnic Armenians and language primarily spoken is Armenian. This is mainly due to the localization of Armenian families during the Soviet era in Azerbaijan to weaken the Ottoman power. The population is predominantly is Christian. So far, their independence has been recognized by none of the UN members including Armenia itself but interestingly been recognized by 3 non-UN members listing separatist countries like Abkhazia, South Ossettia (Georgia) and Transnitria (Moldova).

Why Armenian and Azerbaijan are fighting over this country?

Simple, this region was given to Azerbaijan back then in the USSR era during Stalin's rule. Its purpose is to support the region in with expectations that the country will become communist someday. Consensus has it words that this was a part of Stalin's divide to ensure Armenian cooperation with the soviet union. This is commonly done to weaken the power of a country. This is the rule strategy done by the soviet union to ensure the satellite countries to cooperate (integrate) with them.

The modern world as the separatist movement spread around the world influence the region to finally demand independence from Azerbaijan. They demand the choice to be an independent country or to be reunified with Armenia. However, Azerbaijan, as part of protecting their sovereignty, do not agree with this decision. Which caused tension in the Caucasus. A war could not be avoided which lead to Nagorno-Karabakh (1988 - 1994). Azerbaijan was supported by its Turkey, Pakistan, and Israel. Armenia were supported by Russia. Apparently Armenia was able to take control of Nagorno Karabakh which ended to the independence proclamation by Nagorno Karabakh Republic. But Azerbaijan still claim that the region remains in their territory, denying the sovereignty. This country has its leader, money currency, and even capitals already. They have everything it takes to be a country; land, people, constitution, except for one : recognition. Almost none countries recognize their independence, funnily including Armenia itself knowing it would harm their diplomacy. Interestingly, Russia withdraws all their support by declaring ceasefire in the Caucasus.

What will happen then?

With its functioning government and ongoing status quo, the full sovereignty of Artsakh Republic remains to been in the future. With Russia withdrawing, Armenia is now all alone left with his brother in the Caucasus. The position of Artsakh is - I predicted - to be a new country, separated from Armenia, as it is the only way Azerbaijan could (reluctantly) agree giving the region its independence and stop claiming the region as their own.

Eventough, I personally feel that it is unproductive for Artsakh Republic to demand separate government. There are little to almost none human rights oppression in the region since it belonged to Azerbaijan. Moreover, the land was first belong to Azerbaijan before a lot of Armenians are persuaded to move in to divide the direct link between Azerbaijan and Turkey, weakening the relationship. I find the seccession is unproductive and therefore a waste if it is just about ethnicity. This could trigger bigger domino effect in Europe. It is not that urgent.

But another solution has been taken. We don't know what's gonna happen in the next ten years. Will Artsakh be back to Armenia? or will it finally be recognized, or a surprise that it will integrate back to Azerbaijan?
